Chapter 8

Last night we went to the Rosary for Florence Ferko, my school friend Cynthia's mother. This takes place at the Mortuary and involves everyone saying a whole rosary together out loud and then there is a time for anyone who wants to get up and say something about Florence. Then everyone stands around and talks and visits or has some time with family members. This end bit , the visiting bit, was still going on when we left and could have gone on for quite a while.

All of the people there in my generation had gone to All Souls School and been in the same class as me or one up or one down. There were 7 of us from my same class. There was a good number of seniors of course and as Florence was 90, most friends and relatives her age or close and still alive were there, and there were quite a few. So it was very special to be there. Of course it reminded me a lot of all the Grandma Mazur stories from the Janet books as it was an open casket, so she would have been happy. But luckily there were no crims lurking in the corners. The rest of my school crowd, Nancy Galli and Fran Weber, were there too so it was fun to see them and we are hoping to get together if we can. Ronnie and Roberta Sciandri were there along with Roberta's mother who was a really good friend of Florence.

Today is the funeral and Non and Gramps say that a lot of the people that go will go on to the cemetery after the funeral. Noni and Gramps are not planning on going to the funeral so I have to hitch a ride with someone else but this should be doable. They need to be home for 12PM because all of Noah's helpers on his learning program are meeting today with the classroom teacher and with Krista and Ryan to talk about Noah's progress. Auntie Linday does not get home from work until 12.45 so Krista will bring Noah to Gramps and Noni's house. They are fine with this, he knows the house and is comfortable with them. Lucca is a different story as although he loves them and loves coming to the house, he is a handful because he is always into something else and loves to climb. But luckily he started his new day care arrangement yesterday. As Uncle Mike has been in Chicago this week he has not been around to be Mr Daycare for Lucca, so Krista started the new Daycare arrangement this week.

Today also we are going to see if we can get Noni a new mobile. The one she has is the little old Nokia that Dad and I had and I think Kate had it too. It is really hard for her to read the screen and the buttons are very small too. We had a look yesterday and found a good one but did not have enough time to wait for the salesman to tell us what was involved. So hopefully we can do that today. Tonight we might be going to bertaluccis for dinner, Auntie Linda, Michelle and me and whoever else joins in as the day progresses.

This morning as I am sitting here writing Gramps is making his own oatmeal. He has already done his little test to check his blood sugar and taken his 3 morning pills. He takes one more at mid day and then a few after dinner. He records his blood sugar, normally in the 116-130 range, every day in a small book that sites near the table. Dad got told he had diabetes when he was 75 so this is his regime to stay on top of things and he is religious about sticking to this regime. Noni is doing her thing in the bathroom. I got in early.

Noni just came out all dressed but with the little pink hair curler still on that she wears to bed to keep her bangs right. Gramps said that when he went to the gym yesterday one of the ladies arrived with a curler still in her hiar just like moms. He figured she had forgotten it so he mentioned it to one of the gym girls and she went and told the lady who took it out right away. Dad told the gym girls that if he had gone out with mom and that had happened to her and gramps had not told her she would be soooo mad!

more later.
